Releasing Energy & Emotions through movement

women-dancing I was feeling a bit frustrated with my meditation practice for a few days before I got a gentle reminder from my wonderful therapist. She reminded me that if something isn’t working, try a different way of doing it. Duh, right? I remembered how good it feels when I turn on some music to dance and move my body! Movement always helps me feel better when I am feeling stuck or depressed. There are so many choices of ways to move. My favorite way is to just let my body move how it wants to, while listening to some really good music.

No Wrong Way!
There is no right or wrong way to move my body. When I feel stuck, I get a huge release of emotions and energy when I start moving. Last week when I changed my routine so I was moving before sitting to meditate, I cried for the first ten minutes each time. I don’t even know why I was crying, but I know that I must have really needed the release. The movement allowed my body to release those stuck emotions. When I feel depressed, thinking of moving my body frustrates me, and makes me feel overwhelmed. However, if I can find that tiny bit of energy to just do it, I feel so much better afterwards.

Check out this video, it will make you want to get up and dance! Let go of any judgements that may go through your mind, especially if they are saying, “I can’t dance like that”. If you watch closely, you will see that everyone is moving exactly how their bodies want them to. There are no specific moves they are doing. This is like moving meditation.

Storing Energy
Our bodies store so much emotion. If we aren’t expressing our feelings as they come up, our bodies store the emotions and energy. Those stored emotions can cause anxiety and depression. I feel better when I know nobody is watching me, so I  go into my room, lock the door, light some candles, and put on my Ipod. What a great feeling! Our bodies are meant to move, and when we move, we can help our bodies to heal.
