Are you touch deprived?

Ahh…massage

Human touch is essential to our well being. I went to get a massage last night. Every time I get one I am reminded of how much we all need to be touched on a daily basis.  I remember the first time I decided to get a massage. I was very nervous at first because I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t know how I would feel about a stranger touching me. I got over it after about 2 minutes! I wondered why I didn’t think to do this sooner!

I have read that we all need at least 7 hugs per day. How many people do you think actually get this many hugs? I would bet that the majority of people do not get touched nearly enough. When we are touched, it boosts our immune system, it lowers our anxiety levels, and it makes us feel good. I wonder how many people go through a whole day without being touched? I know there are days that we are so busy I have to remind myself to make sure I hug everyone in my family at least a few times! 

Personal Space

I think that we have become scared of invading another person’s space. We learn at a young age not to touch people unless it is okay with them. I definitely agree with this, but I think it has gone to extremes, and people are afraid to touch each other at all now. This is sad. I think we need to turn it around, and offer hugs anytime we can. If someone says no, that is just fine. But at least we will become more aware of how nice it feels to have contact with each other, and we can notice how it affects us.

Pets

It is beneficial to humans to have pets as well. Holding them and petting them also stimulates our immune system and increases serotonin levels. The pet benefits as well as the human. Being touched feels good. Touch is vital on the healing journey that we are all on.  So, go hug someone, or go hold and hug your pet.
